Steve Collins
Undefeated Super-Middleweight World Champion boxer, Steve Collins, born in Cabra, Dublin, 21st July 1964. As an amateur he won the Irish junior heavyweight, light-heavyweight and middleweight titles. Turning professional at the middleweight discipline in Massachusetts in 1986, he won the Irish middleweight title against Sam Story in Boston in 1988, He later beat the world no.5 Kevin Watts, and won 16 straight pro fights before being out pointed by Mike McCallum over 12 rounds in a world W.B.A middleweight championship title fight in Boston in February 1990. In April 1992 he was again beaten on points for the W.B.A. middleweight championship of the world, this time by Reggie Johnson, in Meadowlands, New Jersey. Also losing the E.B.U. decider to Sumbu Kalumbay, in 1993 he won the W.B.C. penta Continental title in a fight against Gerhald Botes of South Africa.
Steve then had another title attempt against Chris Pyatt stopping him in 5 rounds for the W.B.O Middleweight title, he then in his most memorable fight defeated Chris Eubank on points for the W.B.O. Super-Middleweight world championship in Cork in March 1995. Eubanks mandatory return fight was to prove Collins stronger again when they fought for the 2nd time again in Cork, Collins winning on points once again. Collins retired in 1997 with his title after defending his super-middleweight crown 7 times including two notable fights against Britain’s 'Dark Destroyer' Nigel Benn.
He retired with a record of 39 fights, 36 wins and only 3 loses. Since Steve's retirement he has gone on to feature in a number media projects appearing in a U2 music video with Bono, in the movies appearing in Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Michael Collins and numerous television appearances and has featured in the prime time BBC show "Sporting Superstars". In 2004 Steve released the sporting video "Steve Collins Boxing's Hard Men". The video was one of the best selling sporting videos of the year. Steve is available for personal appearances, question and answer evenings, corporate days and media projects.
